RESERVA ECOLÓGICA DE GUAPIAÇU

The Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve (REGUA) is a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) located in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu, and has become one of the most sought-after destinations for birdwatchers, both Brazilian and international, visiting the state of Rio de Janeiro. The reserve features a wide variety of habitats and altitudinal range in the region (30–900 m). It offers several trails of easy to moderate difficulty, which pass through wetlands, grasslands, lowland forest, and both submontane and montane forests. The site is home to over 480 recorded bird species and also offers excellent infrastructure.

Relevant species:  Brazilian Tanager, Yellow-Backed Tanager, White-bellied Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Green-headed Tanager, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Black-banded Owl, Shrike-like Cotinga, White-necked Hawk, Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Unicoloured Antwren, Gray-hooded Atilla, Scaled Antbird, Rufous-capped Antthrush, Ochre-bellied Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Woodpecker, Black-capped Becard, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Boat-billed Heron, Capped Heron, Lemon-chested Greenlet, Long-tailed Pootoo and many others.
